The four medical wards serve 120 medically fragile children. Daisy (girls) and Sweet Basil (boys) medical wards serve the medical needs of infants and young children. Some of the infants in Daisy and Sweet Basil may also have HIV/AIDS. Fresia (girls) and Protea (boys) medical wards serve the needs of children older than 7 years of age. The typical day starts and ends with ward rounds. In between, we provide meals, schooling, therapy, hospital runs, counselling to children and parents and, most importantly, the nurses spend time teaching the children how to take care of their medical conditions. Working as a team of professionals, with the guidance, prayers and support of the Pallottine Sisters we are able to take impossible situations and make them possible. You soon realize how proud the staff is about the work that takes place at St. Joseph's when they point to a child who would never walk, and he is walking, or when they point to a child and tell you that he was not suppose to live longer than 6 months, and now he is one year of age, with a bright future. |
We also have children that succumb to their illnesses, and while we mourn their loss, we have a sense of peace about and for them, as we make sure their limited time on earth is spent in a loving environment, and that they died with dignity, in a state of grace. There are miracles that take place at the St. Joseph's Home medical wards. I want to take part in those miracles and wish to donate. Also, have a close look at our Sunflower Ward for HIV infected children. |
