General information:

The bathroom facilities in each of the medical wards have not been renovated since they were built in the early 1960's. Each of the medical wards has two large bathrooms for children and a bathroom for parents and staff. Each ward serves the needs of up to 30 children. The health and safety standards have undergone dramatic changes since that time and we also need to address the wear and tear the bathrooms have taken for the past 43 years.

Each medical ward serves children with an eclectic mix of medical problems, and each bathroom has to be designed to meet that mix. We plan to address the following items as a result of this effort.

  1. All lighting will be made energy efficient and brighter.
  2. Replacement of cast iron large tubs with Fiberglas tubs designed for children.
  3. Add showers for the older children that will allow for wheelchair children to shower.
  4. Replace steel framed windows with aluminium windows to reduce drafts and cut down on maintenance and repair costs.
  5. Re-tile the bathrooms using non-slip tiles.
  6. Refurbish cupboards and add additional storage area for storage of children's clothing.
  7. Add new commodes designed for handicapped children.
  8. Re-lay spaces and separate shower from toilet area and laundry room area.
  9. Create enclosures to maintain privacy and proper temperatures.
