st. joseph's home nursing school

St Josephs home opened a nursing school in 1974 and after a few years of not training it reopened its doors on the 2 January 2008, due to a shortage of nurses in South Africa.

R2176 - leading to enrolment as a nursing auxiliary

Number of students

At present (2008) we have 13 students registered from all over the Western Cape. We are hoping to increase our numbers to 20 students in 2009.

Details of the course

  • The duration of the course is 12 - 18 months
  • The course is accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • There is a final external SANC exam
  • Exams are conducted in March, July and November
  • Most of the training is done at St Joseph's Home except for a small practical component which is done at another institution

Minimum entrance requirements

  • Grade 10 (Std 8) School certificate
  • Matric and other certificates advantageous
  • Due to many applications each year, chosen applicants will be invited to sit a 2 hour ‘pretest” after which a short list will be drawn up and interview will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants will be informed in writing
  • Closing date for applications for 2011 - March 30; 2010

A note from the tutor

I have been a part of St Joseph's Home for many years. I worked as a senior sister on the junior girls medical ward. I have always had a passion for teaching. I find it wonderful to witness people blossom and grow as they gain knowledge and are up skilled.

I am presently the tutor of the students managing their theoretical component and the practical component together with the entire multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications:
B Cur Degree in Nursing Administration and Nursing Education (cum laude)
Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery
