| mind the gap - support of our medical beds | |||
|
Mind the "GAP!" Is an announcement familiar to the ears of every commuter travailing on the London underground; "the Gap" being the distance between carriage and platform. In our case, "the Gap" is the distance between the actual cost of a medical ward and our limited government funding. In either case, bad things happen when one fails to "Mind the Gap". |

Project: To support the "Mind the Gap" cost of one bed. This support will enable St. Joseph's to care for the holistic needs of infants and children with chronic medical conditions. Impact of project: Fiscal Transparency: Requested Amount: For one medical cot/bed the sponsorship cost is R25,000 for one full year of support or R12,500 for 6 months of support. St. Joseph's Home is celebrating its 75 years of uninterrupted service to children. Our children suffer from long term medical illnesses like HIV/AIDS, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, heart-lung-kidney failures and congenital abnormalities. All the children at St. Joseph's Home are placed through provincial hospitals like the Red Cross Children's Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital. Our children require 24 hour nursing care and on-going rehabilitative services. The typical child will remain in care for up to six months. Some children stay longer due to parental neglect of their medical condition and/or from a lack of medical resources in the areas from which they originate. For some children, St. Joseph's is the last home they will know. The holistic treatment approach developed by the Pallottine Sisters was designed to give children with chronic illnesses a second chance at a healthy childhood. To that end, the Home includes a crèche and a school. It also includes Physio and Occupational Therapy, and a social work team to keep children connected to their families and communities. In addition, parent housing is provided during critical phases of a child's treatment, and the Home works to maintain an active and homelike environment for the children. In 2002 St. Joseph's expanded its service to include a specialized HIV/AIDS medical ward. This was done in response to the overcrowding of HIV infected babies and young children in hospitals. St. Joseph's was an early pioneer in addressing the medical needs of HIV/AIDS infants and young children. Throughout our history, St. Joseph's has consistently responded to the critical medical issues affecting children. Your support of this proposal will help to make whole, the one year operating cost of a medical cot/bed. The services we provide are a critical need to the children we care for and form a vital part of the solution for these children who through no fault of their own require our specialized convalescent care. |
RECOGNITION INCLUDES: Naming Rights: We will place signage in the medical ward entrance which honours your support. Annual Report: Your support will be listed in our SJH Newsletter, in our annual report, on our Facebook page and our Blog. Gala: Your support will be recognized at our grand 2010 Gala Celebration. General information: Given the fiscal shortfalls, the Board of Trustees estimates the reserve funds held by St. Joseph’s will not allow the organization to sustain its existing services without an organized and established fundraising campaign. To that end, the Board of Trustees and the Pallottine Missionary Sisters have embarked on a campaign to “Mind the Gap” which is the difference between our actual cost, and our limited government subsidy. Your donation of R25 000 will make whole, the one year operating cost of one bed. The services we provide are of critical need to the children we care for. Your support today makes you a vital part of the solution for the children who through no fault of their own require our specialized convalescent care. With your support St. Joseph’s will be able to deliver excellent holistic service that has effectively made a difference in saving the lives of children since 1935.
