Changing Lives, One Small Step at a Time

Our Miracle Child

This is Liso. She is 21 months old and was admitted to St. Joseph's Home at 5 months. She was born with a Chronic Lung Disease, limiting breath function to only about 30%. As a result, the first 16 months of her life, she was completely dependent of oxygen. When she came to St. Joseph's, she was very inert, spending most of her time lying in bed.

The anoxia (lack of oxygen) significantly delayed her development. Unlike most babies her age, Liso couldn't hold her own bottle and by the age of 18 months could not walk. She had to spend all of her time in her cot attached to her oxygen instead of getting to play.

Amazingly, it has been a month since Liso has needed extra oxygen. The only time she uses it now is when she has a cold. Her development and her strength has im-proved by leaps and bounds.

And best of all, she just learned to walk! In the mornings and afternoons she runs around freely with the other children and is hav-ing a great time. As you can see, Liso has grown into a very active and cheerful girl!

Cooking Lessons

For the past month and a half, the volunteers at St. Joseph's initiated a new after-school program. In the afterschool program, there are activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, religious instruction and playing outside.

Cooking is also a part of the program. The volunteers cook once a week with the older girls and once a week with the older boys. During the cooking lessons the children learn important skills like: how to make a healthy supper, how to work hygienically, and how to use different utensils.

The children and the volunteers both love the cooking lessons.
