Our Miracle Child
Jevani was born on 24 December 2008 and has since the age of 1 year had multiple admissions to Victoria hospital in Wynberg
for malnourishment and non-compliance of his chronic medication. Sadly, he and his siblings had been abandoned by their parents
and were placed in their maternal grandmother's care. She failed to take him for his follow up appointments and on 3 January
2012 he was again admitted to Victoria Hospital with severe malnourishment and was also diagnosed with TB.
He was referred to St Joseph's Home for sub acute care and on completion of his TB treatment he was discharged by his doctor
into his grandmother's care in August 2012. In December 2012 Jevani was again admitted to Victoria hospital. Sadly, this time
he has suffered a stroke and right sided hemiplegia and speech regression. He was transferred to RXH for acute treatment of
his condition and admitted to ICU.
When stabilized, Jevani was referred to St Joseph's Home. Despite being 5 years of age, he was not able to walk or talk and
was dependant on the staff for mobility and self-care activities. After receiving regular physio and occupational therapy,
he is now able to walk with minimal support and is less dependent on the staff.
His speech has improved tremendously with the help of speech therapy and he is able to communicate with his peers and staff.
Attending crèche has also speeded up his progress and his determination has been a big contributing factor in his exceptional
recovery and wellbeing.
Jevani is still at St Joseph's Home and he is an inspiration to us all.
